In the United States, CCL uses an algorithm based on zip/ postal code to assign new members to their chapter. We do this because the algorithm has proven to be more accurate at assigning new members to their local chapter than we humans are at picking the right chapter when presented with a list of local chapters. The algorithm is just over 90 percent accurate, so there will be some misses.
How does the algorithm work?
- If a new member has no valid zip code, they will not be assigned to a local CCL chapter or congressional district. But if their state is known, we will assign them to the At Large CCL chapter for their state.
- If a new member has entered a valid zip code, the algorithm compares the new member's zip code to chapter zip codes.
- If the new member is within 40 miles of a single CCL chapter's zip code, they will be assigned to that local CCL chapter.
- If two or more chapters exist within 40 miles, the algorithm considers multiple other factors to determine what we think is the ideal chapter.
- If no chapter exists within 40 miles, the algorithm assigns the new user to the At Large chapter for the state.
- CCL also determines their congressional district based on their zip code.
Can we override the algorithm?
Yes! First, ask yourself if this is an infrequent issue. If less than 10% of new members are assigned incorrectly, that's expected.
However, if a large percentage of new users are being incorrectly assigned, State Coordinators can request manual zip code overrides by submitting a ticket to the help desk. We ask that State Coordinators coordinate the request because manually overriding zip codes could unduly affect other local chapters and the At Large chapter for the state.
Can Group Leaders move new members to a new chapter?
Yes! Please see the help topic for moving members to a different chapter.
